Martin Sheen Discusses Family, Activist DNA for Who Do You Think You Are?

Martin Sheen in Who Do You Think You Are? - Lalo Villar/NBC

Actor Martin Sheen explores the origins of his family history, activism, and commitment to social justice in the Season 3 premiere of Who Do You Think You Are? on Friday, February 3 on NBC.

Although Martin Sheen rose to acting fame in such films as Badlands, Apocalypse Now, Gandhi, The Dead Zone (and many more) before going on to play the President in The West Wing, Sheen has long been a peaceful activist for social justice. From his support of the farm workers movement in 1965 with labor leader Casar Chavez to his opposition of the Iraq war and his fight for the environment, Martin Sheen has a long history of fighting for what he believes is right.

So, with his family history the focus of the Season 3 premiere of Who Do You Think You Are?, how does Martin Sheen feel that his journey into the past relates to his own commitment for social justice? When The Deadbolt spoke with Martin Sheen this week for the Season 3 debut, Sheen was keen to explore the origin of his activism.

“I have to say that was one of the things that I thought could very much be the case,” Sheen told The Deadbolt about how his activism could have been in the family.

“I had two uncles on both sides of my parents’ families. My uncle, who was an Irish volunteer and fought in the [Irish] War of Independence and then fought against the free state in the Civil War [of Ireland] from 1921 to 1923.”

Martin Sheen in Who Do You Think You Are? - Peter Morrison/NBC

For Martin Sheen, born Ramón Antonio Gerard Estévez in Dayton, Ohio to a Spanish father and Irish mother, his fight for social justice has deeper family roots.

“On my father’s side,” Sheen continued, “my father’s brother Matias had fought against Franco at the onset of his coup and spent an awful lot of time in jail. In fact, he received a life sentence that was finally rescinded in 1969 and I had just met him that year. So, the connections are just amazing in that they’re so deeply personal. And yes, both of them had risen up against oppression. In one case, a dictatorship in Spain and had suffered mightily for it but stuck to his principles.”

So, after exploring his family history on Who Do You Think You Are?, does Martin Sheen see a connection between his own activism and the principles of those who came before him in his family?

“For me, maybe this is some unknown quality that I have possessed. Not to the extent that these gentlemen did – they were absolutely heroic and risked their lives – but the message is clear that maybe this is part of my DNA.”

Martin Sheen in Who Do You Think You Are? - Peter Morrison/NBC

The father of Hollywood actors Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez, Martin Sheen also revealed that he now has a grounded sense of who he really is after taking the NBC journey into the past. In fact, Sheen has a special respect for the value of history.

“I think anyone who goes on one of these journeys,” Sheen elaborated, “whether it’s in front of a camera or on the internet, is really looking for a personal identification with the past. What is amazing about that is that as you go back further and further into lineage in generation and generation, you begin to look at dates. For example, one of my great, great, great grandparents died at the onset of the American Revolutionary War. In that sense, it gives you some perspective that you really think about in terms of historical value.”

Who Do You Think You Are? airs Friday, February 3 at 8/7c on NBC.

Remodeled: Transforming the Modeling Industry with Paul Fisher

Paul Fisher in Remodeled on The CW

After guiding the careers of such elite supermodels as Naomi Campbell and Monica Bellucci, super-agent Paul Fisher has returned to the modeling industry in The CW series Remodeled, which airs Wednesdays at 9/8c. Although Paul Fisher may not have been the nicest guy on the modeling block as a legendary agent to many elite models, Fisher has returned to the industry that once made him a self-professed egomanic.

With his new series Remodeled, which takes ailing modeling agencies and turns them into sustainable world class affiliates of his newly formed Network Talent, Paul Fisher is a changed man on a mission to transform the industry. Once living up to the stereotype of a powerful world class agent who cared more about fame than his models, Paul Fisher returned to the modeling world after a decade long soul-searching expedition into himself. As you’ll learn in our new interview for Remodeled, Paul Fisher is now making up for his past sins.

With Remodeled on The CW airwaves, The Deadbolt went one-on-one with Paul Fisher for an exclusive and candid chat about the past, present, and his future vision for the modeling industry through The Network and his message on Remodeled.

THE DEADBOLT: So, how is that Paul Fisher from years ago different from this Paul Fisher of today?

PAUL FISHER: That’s a tough and an intense question, because I found my faith about nine years ago. My faith, my whole trip is about transformation. It’s about becoming a different man. It’s about caring more about others and being less selfish.

It’s hard for me to watch my passion, my intensity, and my temper up on the screen. In my humble opinion, I got back into the modeling industry after a layoff of about ten years of being out of it because I had to beg and beg this industry for forgiveness. Excuse my language here, but I was a piece of sh**. I was a terrible, terrible man. I took advantage of my power. When I was the famous Paul Fisher, the agent of Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymour, Brooke Burke, Kimora Lee Simmons, Carla Bruni, and Monica Bellucci, I was an animal. I was an egomaniac.

I hope and I pray that I’ve changed in the past ten years. I care more about others than I do myself. I believe before that I wanted to become a famous agent because I wanted to walk into places and be that famous guy, Paul Fisher. But now I want the power that comes along with my Network and the TV show because I truly do want to create a safe environment for young kids. When people bury me in the ground, I want people to say that he was a good man who truly, truly cared about these little kids, cared about these businesses, and that he was trying to help out.

THE DEADBOLT: To effect change through The Network and Remodeled, how have you had to raise your standards?

FISHER: Well, first of all, I walked into a bar about two and a half years ago and saw a little kid, her name was Stephanie Roberts, a beautiful, beautiful girl of color that I put on the cover of American Vogue magazine. I must have made her $5 million or $6 million dollars, we called her magic. She was a bartender. That beat the hell out of me and it was one of the reasons why I decided to build this thing called The Network.

I realized it back then, when I was the famous Paul Fisher, that I was a terrible role model. I didn’t teach these young kids that if they didn’t treat their physical features as a blessing from God, it would be the one thing that haunts them for the rest of their lives. If I could teach these kids that when you make a couple million dollars, if you don’t give 10% of that back to a charity or a foundation or become part of your community that the world would just take that away from you.

So I’m trying really hard now to teach my kids around the world that these physical features they’re born with really are a responsibility. If they don’t use this as a responsibility to become an incredible role model in their community and don’t give back until it’s painful, it will be taken away and it will be like it never ever happened.

I’m really trying to convince these kids not to become a model because you want to become famous, become a model because you can touch other young kids around the world and they can look up to you. And you have a responsibility because other kids are going to look up to you. That’s the kind of message that we’re trying to put into the consciousness of our kids around the world.

THE DEADBOLT: What’s the biggest challenge for you when it seems like the power people in the modeling industry are in it for all of the wrong reasons?

FISHER: Well, I got into the modeling industry for all of the wrong reasons. So, with a lot of these people, I know exactly where they’re coming from. There are beautiful young girls and boys and a lot of money in our industry, so it’s hard not to get caught up in everything and do this for the right reasons.

But I believe that everybody in their souls, they have the spark of God inside them and they all want to do this for the right reasons. It’s just that they’re afraid to out of fear because of the bottom line, because of so many various reasons.

What The Network is trying to do is be a unified voice. We think there are a lot of people around the world talking about the skinny issue, the “size 0″ issue, or girls are sticking their fingers down their throats to emulate the girls walking down the runways. And we’re not taking any responsibility, our industry. Plus sized clothing, they call it “plus size” when these women are actually healthy and normal women.

So I think there are a lot of voices around the world, major editors and major magazines that are saying the same thing I’m saying. The only problem is that it’s bifurcated, and it’s all over the world. What we’re trying to do is have one unified voice so we can all talk about these issues that are really, really important to us, from Photoshopping, super skinny girls walking down the runway, and 15-year old girls being half-naked shooting huge advertising campaigns where no 15-year old girl could even afford those clothes. So we’re trying to do things that a lot of other people are talking about, we just happen to have a TV show where we can talk and have a platform to scream from.

THE DEADBOLT: With the show, what was the most professionally challenging episode to film this season?

FISHER: Each one has been professionally challenging. We selected agencies that were definitely hurting and ones we thought we could definitely assist. Out of the 8, with 5 or 6, the biggest challenge was that they they all thought they knew what they were doing was correct. I had to convince them they had no clue about what they were doing.

But I guess the most challenging episode would have to be maybe the second episode. They had a modeling school, they talked a lot about God and being religious and caring about the kids when in reality they were just wanting to make a buck off of these little kids. When we walked out of that agency, the very next day they went back to [being a modeling school]. They call it a workshop now versus a school. That was probably my toughest one just because I really believe in people, and I believed them with every fiber of my being. When I get let down, that’s very difficult on me.

THE DEADBOLT: How hard is it to improve the modeling industry when you’re up against the media and the images that are being put out there?

FISHER: 150 agencies, that’s what I have on my brain. If I have 10 agencies around the world, or I have 40 agencies, are people really going to listen to Paul Fisher? Right now I’ve got about 50, I’m the largest in the world. Elite has 36 agencies, I have 50. Elite represents 6000 models, I represent 14,000. I’m not going to show my muscles, or have muscles to show when I’m 5-times bigger than Elite, when I’m 5-times bigger than my competition.

Over the next 12 to 18 months, when we’re sitting on 150 agencies around the world, with 10 or 15 of the biggest stars in the world, I believe we’ll have enough power and weight to truly make a huge difference in the modeling world. And probably not before that. We’ll chip away and chip away, people will hear things and they’ll be interested. But to truly have power in our industry, you have to have a tremendous amount of strength. When we’re at 100 agencies, or 150 agencies, with 40,000 kids, and 10 or 15 kids who are the biggest models in the world, I think people will then be forced to listen to me and my agencies around the world.

THE DEADBOLT: Given how young people are more socially aware, do you think the timing is right for this type of change and the show?

FISHER: Yeah. My new rap is social media is the new currency of this world. When they took our kids off the covers of Vogue magazine and they put 11 celebrities on Vogue and 11 celebrities on Bazaar each year out of every 12 months, we have to find a way to create our following and to create our brand. Now, with social media and the online presence, we can touch millions of people within minutes or seconds.

So as the show becomes stronger, as our Network becomes stronger, as our kids become stronger, and as our following increases, we can affect people’s bottom line. If major designers continue to use “size 00″ skinny girls and they contuinue to affect the way young women look in the mirror and see themselves because they can’t look like these “size 00″ skinny girls, it will affect their bottom line to the power of social media. I do think we will have an effect and it will be good. I think we have to become stronger and stronger and our following has to be come bigger and bigger.

THE DEADBOLT: How important is it for you to be honest no matter how people take your delivery?

FISHER: It’s everything to me. I can’t help myself. I made enough money and I made enough people famous and made some wonderful friends. My family is the most important thing to me aside from my faith. I swore to myself two and a half years ago that if I was ever to go back into the modeling industry – which I wasn’t excited about, coming back into this industry – that I would be brutally honest every step of the way, no matter what people thought.

People look at us like a reality show, but this is no reality show. The one rule I had with The CW was don’t tell me what to do, don’t tell me what to say, this is a docu-series. I’m not building a business because they’re doing a show on me.

I beg of your readers to go to our website, to NetworkTalent.com and see who we are. You’ll see my drug experts, my health experts, my parenting experts, my body conscious for women experts. You’ll see my models around the world talking about things that are really, really important. Anybody who thinks we’re just doing a reality show so I can walk into a place and get free dinner, we’re doing a docu-series so we can spread the message of health and wellness in our industry.

Beyonce is the focus of the long-awaited intimate feature-length HBO documentary called Beyonce: Life is But a Dream airing on Saturday, February 16.

Directed by Beyonce herself, Life is But a Dream is a fusion of video that provides raw, unprecedented access to the private entertainment icon and high-voltage performances.

“HBO has a history of pushing every boundary with class and authenticity,” said Beyonce about teaming with the cable network. “Some of my favorite shows are on HBO, so I am excited that my film will be part of its bold programming. This film was so personal to me, it had to have the right home.”

The new documentary follows on the heels of Beyonce’s explosive halftime show at Super Bowl XLVII and comes before the singer’s upcoming March 2013 cover of Vogue.

Beyonce: Life is But a Dream is a multi-faceted portrait of the 16-time Grammy Award-winning singer, businesswoman, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, wife and mother, showing off the extraordinary gifts that have made her a global phenomenon, and stripping away the veneer of stardom.

The upcoming doc includes extensive first-person footage, some of it shot by Beyonce on her laptop, in which she reflects on the realities of celebrity, the refuge she finds onstage and the transcendent joy of becoming a mother last year.

Life is But a Dream sheds light on Beyonce’s childhood in Houston, with home movies revealing the close bond she built with her family and charts the challenges Beyonce felt when she decided to manage her career and build her own company, Parkwood Entertainment.

The upcoming documentary also captures the intense physical and emotional demands Beyonce goes through in the studio, preparing for live performances, running a business and her family life, including her return to the spotlight after the birth of her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, in January 2012 with husband Jay-Z.

Beyonce: Life is But a Dream airs Saturday, February 16 on HBO.

‘The Story of God with Morgan Freeman’ Finale This Sunday!

Sadly, Sunday night will wrap up the special National Geographic Channel series “The Story of God with Morgan Freeman.” The special series has been the most interesting, educational, and enjoyable series to watch. It truly has been a breath of fresh air from all of the reality TV, drama, and scripted television that has filled up our DVRs.

The ‘The Story of God with Morgan Freeman’ series included six episodes answering the BIG questions in the universe about God, and what it means in different regions and cultures of the world. “Who is God? Where did we come from? Why does evil happen? What happens when we die? Every human being on earth has asked themselves these questions at some point, and most likely each person has found a different answer,” according to a press release. Each episode focuses on one of these questions and Freeman travels the world for the answers.

Episode 1 “Beyond Death”: Is there an afterlife? How has does a reaction to the afterlife change the way we live this life? Freeman explores how different religions past and present explain what happens when we die.

Episode 2 “Apocolypse”: Violent upheaval and fiery judgment fill popular imagination, but was the lore of apocalypse born out of the strife that plagued the Middle East two millennia ago? The true religious meaning of the apocalypse may not be a global war, but an inner revelation.

Episode 3 “Who is God?”: Freeman begins a quest to discover who God is and how he, she or they have evolved over human history.

Episode 4 “Creation”: Freeman travel the world to ask where we came from and what happened in the beginning. How does scientific theory of the creation of the cosmos compare with the dawn of civilization?

Episode 5 “Why Does Evil Exist?”: Is the devil real? What is the root of all evil? Morgan attempts to understand the root of evil and how ideas of it evolved

In the upcoming final episode Sunday night, episode 6 “The Power of Miracles,” Morgan seeks to discover how our belief in miracles can shape our understanding of God. Are miracles real?

If you haven’t had the chance to watch the series, there’s a good chance it is OnDemand to catch up. We really can’t write/say enough good things about this special documentary series.

“The Story of God with Morgan Freeman” final episode airs Sunday at 9 pm ET on National Geographic Channel.

Lifetime announced they’ve ordered a two-hour biopic Britney (Working title) “detailing the tumultuous story of pop icon Britney Spears’ rise to fame, fall from grace and eventual triumphant resurrection, firmly securing her position as one of the world’s greatest entertainers,” says a press release from Lifetime.

Britney Jean Spears was a talented young girl from Louisiana who made a name for herself in the music scene as a young teenager. Her rise to fame, her parents divorce, her relationship and breakup with Justin Timberlake, a quickie marriage in Las Vegas, and her ill-fated marriage to Kevin Federline, all led to her spiral to rock bottom when she lost custody of her sons and being placed under her Dad’s conservatorship. “But despite her past troubles, Britney has battled back to rebuild her career to its former glory, proving to everyone that she’s a timeless force in entertainment,” says the press release.

Britney Spears could arguably be the greatest comeback in entertainment, and we’ll soon see the two-hour Britney biopic premiering on Lifetime in 2017. Production begins this September in Vancouver.

NBC has set April 7 as the premiere date for the new unscripted series, “First Dates,” from executive producer Ellen DeGeneres. The series gives a glimpse of the simple wonder when a couple meets for the first time and if love can blossom.

Golden Globe-winning actress Drew Barrymore serves as the narrator of the series. NBC has ordered 8 episodes of the new series for the first season. “Based on a hit U.K. format, this unique hourlong series offers an authentic look at a variety of real first dates happening over one night at the same restaurant in Chicago. The show features daters from cities across the country, and of all ages, sexualities and dating experience. Using a fly-on-the-wall and hidden-camera approach, viewers will be along for the ride as the dates unfold. Some dates could be wildly successful, while others strike out in hilariously awkward fashion. Never has dating been captured in a more real and relatable way. At the end of each hour, the daters must reveal to one another if they’d like to see each other again or if it will be back to love’s drawing board!” says NBC’s press release.

Get ready to explore all the romantic possibilities and endless awkwardness (we hope) with the series premiere of “First Dates” airing Friday, April 7th at 8 pm ET on NBC.

HBO Documentary Films is set to debut “Warning: This Drug May Kill You” on May 1, addressing the U.S. opioid addiction epidemic. The death rate has quadrupled since 1999, with nearly 100 people dying every day from opioid overdoses. That number is higher than death by car accident or gun homicide annually in U.S.

“From journalist Perri Peltz (HBO’s “Risky Drinking”), WARNING: THIS DRUG MAY KILL YOU tells devastating personal stories of families who have lost a loved one to an opioid overdose, all of them the result of addictions that started with doctors’ prescriptions of dangerous painkillers such as OxyContin, Vicodin and Percocet,” says HBO’s press release. “WARNING: THIS DRUG MAY KILL YOU takes an unflinching look at ordinary people whose lives turned on a dime after minor and major ailments led to the over-prescription of highly addictive opioids, which are often the gateway to heroin. The film shines a light on the role the pharmaceutical industry and the medical establishment have played in the alarming rise of opioid prescriptions.”

The documentary puts a face on this grave epidemic with harrowing pictures and cell phone videos exposing opioid addiction an its deadly consequences. “Warning: This Drug May Kill You” debuts exclusively on HBO on Monday, May 1 at 10 pm ET, and will also be available HBO ON DEMAND, HBO NOW, HBO GO and affiliate portals.
